Wow, thanks for translating this Alex! Otomo is perhaps my favourite mana-ka; I adore every single panel he draws. This was an incredibly insightful lecture! For one, I didn't know Otomo was the first to bring Japanese-looking characters into manga.
I have to commend Takekuma for highlighting NOTHING WILL BE AS IT WAS, because for me its one of Otomo's most ambitious and perfected stories. And I also was stunned by that scene in Fireball as well (especially the panel where the oldest brother is hovering above the city in a circular energy mass - chilling stuff!).
I'm kind've disappointed Takekuma didn't go into Otomo's animation work a bit more (such as his Cannon Fodder piece), but in all fairness there are plenty of essays about his animation work available.

If anyone is interested, I might be able to scan some images from SHORT PEACE and HIGHWAY-STAR...

"I think it’s basically anything big and flashy, whether it’s a big spread or even one panel like that Fire Ball panel (I think that one panel takes up only about a third of a page)."

This is what I think that term meant at all. I think it fits in with the whole "no climatic moments" that Otomo seemed to favor while creating manga.

And I think that sort of thing would make some readers go "well, what was the point of all that?", and makes me feel like Otomo was just trying to draw manga about people in the process of doing, and not necessarily the "before and after" which a lot of people wanted to see. Focusing on the "what" more than the "why?"
